Oxnard by the Sea: Family Resort Mandalay Bay Embassy Suites

OK, Oxnard is a rough name for any town, but it does happen to be right on the ocean in sunny Southern California.  Our family of five visited there late August 2010, staying at the Embassy Suites right on the beach.  Our room consisted of two bathrooms, two queen size beds in one room, a pullout sofa and a kitchenette.  We also enjoyed a partial view on our lanai.  The resort was definitely aimed at families with nice pools, a big hot tub, buggy rentals and various other activities.  The surrounding area includes long stretches of beach homes, but not much in the way of places to eat. The actual town is quite a ways away. Therefore all eating must be done on site except for what you bring to stock your kitchen.  We arrived late in the evening and ordered pizza which did not go over well . . . but there were two bathrooms.  Breakfast was great!  The lobby was built to impress.  There were some tired corners in the guest room area, at least in the part of the resort where we stayed.  However, the price was quite reasonable — we booked online.  The staff was friendly.  One of our teenage daughters became trapped in the elevator, which by her estimation, lasted almost 20 minutes. Because the electricity actually went out in the elevator she was unable to use the phone and call for help.  She rang the alarm button for quite awhile.  Once she was finally “freed” by maintenance, they seemed to be quite shocked that she was in there. She was not able to call us on her ever present cell phone — no reception from the garage basement level?  So, while we enjoyed ourselves and felt that it was quite a bargain for ocean front, it wasn’t our favorite.  If I had a younger family and was looking for a decent place to stay on the beach where my kids could make castles in the sand.  I would probably come back.
